Like the idea of a Toyota GT 86 but wish it was open top? A convertible version is heavily rumoured, but in the meantime Cartel Customs has gone even further and created a striking speedster version.

It’s based on the Scion FR-S, the American-spec GT 86. Its roof has gone completely, and the windscreen and side windows have significantly shrunk to create a swept, more aerodynamic look. The back seats have, unsurprisingly, been binned, replaced by some sculptured rollover protection. There’s a custom two-tone paint job, new red-rimmed 18in alloy wheels and a behemoth rear wing, which is made from carbonfibre.

The interior is pretty wild, shorn of all equipment and smothered in garish red leather trim. The dials and speedo have moved into the centre, the air conditioning controls (not really necessary with no roof!) replaced by ignition and fire extinguisher switches, hinting at a track focused driving experience. There’s a new steering wheel, too, with the standard-fit airbag gone.

There are tweaks under the skin, with the clutch, exhaust system, suspension and brakes all receiving (as yet unspecified) upgrades. Expect a rortier noise, firmer ride and better stopping power, though. The engine is likely to remain the 197bhp/152lb ft 2-litre four-cylinder boxer unit found in standard Scion FR-S, Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ models.

Production of Cartel’s crackers creation is, sadly, unlikely. More happily, it’s just one of the first of many heavily tuned 86’s we can expect in the coming years.
