Question is can you connect the JBL system to any aftermarket headunit? I've seen quite a few aftermarket Toyota specific headunits on ebay that state not compatible with JBL sound.

Cos I agree, the headunit is a bit limited, the volume knob is terrible, too short and stiff, I usually end up pressing it accidentally (turning the music off) instead of turning the volume up or down. It's not 100% compatible with my phone , it's just the voice command stuff that doesn't seem to work which is kind of important since the head unit doesn't have voice command itself, music and actual phone calls are fine though. And ultimately no information available about connecting an aftermarket camera to the stock headunit (need to figure out which block of pins and which pins within the block to use).

I 100% agree with this and think it's an oversight on Toyota's behalf. As soon as I drove the car back from collection I noticed this

But if you think about it most cars that this unit is fitted to probably have steering wheel volume buttons so people rarely use the volume control knob.

It's not even knurled\textured for god's sake !

I've had the car less than 24 hours and already I want to remove that knob and paint it in something a bit more sticky (like whatever the dash is finished in!).

I know you can buy the soft-touch paints.. so we'll see!
